A Life Shaped by Sports, Faith, and Resilience

Early Beginnings in Columbia, South Carolina

Omar Smallwood Hillman III, better known as "Os," was born into the Hillman family as the fourth of five siblings on July 21, 1952, in Columbia, SC. His upbringing was deeply intertwined with sports and business, influenced by his father, a well-known local businessman and owner of Hillman Sporting Goods.

Os Hillman: A Rising Star in Sports

Os's early years were filled with the sounds of basketballs on the court and the peaceful ambiance of golf courses. He graduated from A.C. Flora High School in 1970, where he distinguished himself as a multi-talented athlete. In basketball, he led his team to a state championship in 1969, and in golf, he contributed significantly to another state championship victory in 1970. His golfing prowess was evident from a young age, with remarkable achievements including three hole-in-ones by age 14.

Overcoming Personal Tragedy

The sudden loss of his father in a plane crash, which also led to the family business's bankruptcy, marked a challenging period in Os's life. Nevertheless, he persevered, securing a golf scholarship at the University of South Carolina and later pursuing a professional golf career.

A Journey of Faith and Personal Life

Os’s life took a significant turn in 1975 when he embraced Christianity, influenced by Pastor Jim Mezick. His faith journey brought significant changes in his personal life, including his marriage to Diane in 1980, with whom he had a daughter, Charis. Following their divorce in 1996, Os experienced another marriage and divorce before finding love again with Pamela in 2016.

Career Evolution: From Golf to Business

Post his golf career, Os ventured into the world of sales and marketing. He worked in various roles before establishing The Aslan Group in 1983, a successful advertising agency. However, a financial crisis in 1994, akin to being caught in a Bernie Madoff-like scam, led to the agency’s closure.

Rising from the Ashes: A New Purpose

This setback marked the beginning of a new chapter for Os. He became a prominent figure in the faith@work movement, gaining recognition through media appearances and international speaking engagements. He has authored over 26 books and is known for his daily devotional, TGIF Today God Is First.
